If you're getting an unwanted border, line, or small spots of "debris" around your stamped image, don't worry! This is usually caused by excess ink, dust, or small pieces of material picking up ink around the image area.
Try these simple steps to get a cleaner impression:
1. Check the Stamp for Debris
Start by looking closely at the rubber surface of your stamp. Small pieces of paper, dust, dried ink, or other debris can stick to the rubber and transfer to your project.
Gently clean the stamp and remove anything that shouldn't be there. Make sure the stamp is completely clean and dry before trying again.
2. Check How Much Ink You're Applying
Too much ink is one of the most common causes of unwanted borders or extra marks. When excess ink builds up around the edges of the rubber, it can transfer to your paper along with your intended image.
Instead of pressing the stamp deeply into the ink pad, gently tap the ink onto the raised image until it is evenly covered.
3. Avoid Over-Inking the Edges
Pay particular attention to the edges of your stamp when applying ink. If ink gets onto areas outside of the intended design, those areas can leave an unwanted outline or border.
After inking, take a quick look at the rubber before stamping. If you see ink where it shouldn't be, carefully remove the excess with a clean, dry cloth or appropriate stamp-cleaning method.
4. Use Even Pressure
When stamping, press down firmly and evenly, but avoid pushing too hard. Excessive pressure can cause the edges of the stamp to make contact with the paper and create an unwanted border.
Also, try not to rock or slide the stamp while pressing down, as this can create extra marks around your image.
5. Check Your Stamping Surface
Make sure you're stamping on a clean, flat surface. Dust, loose fibers, scraps of paper, or other debris underneath your stamp can sometimes affect the impression.
